Chapter 5 - Operating on Instict

The idea that “our culture needs more right-brain qualities” such as intuitiveness, conceptual thinking, ability to synthesize, and to become more artistic is covered in this chapter. It is necessary for a leader to be a whole brain thinker.
My question is how do you develop your right –brain if you a left-brain person. I would put definitely say that I am a right brain person. I do have a few left-brain qualities, but I am not very analytical. I am creative and feel that I am very intuitive; I’m attempting to become more of a conceptual thinker. I feel that the credential program and PLNU has forced me to look at situations using whole brain. In the field of educational leadership there is a great need for whole brain thinking because of the need synthesize but also the analytical part dealing with budgets and such.
I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of educational leaders and out of the nine that I have worked for I can put eight of them into a category of right brain or left brain. There is only one that I can without a doubt say is a whole brain thinker. It is no surprise to me that she is the most successful in leadership. Her staff works a strong team; she has a clear understanding of her budget, and also how to use the budget to maneuver around district requirements. She has turned around the schools she has worked with and continues to improve herself. Above all else she has the leadership instinct, and I feel that has want makes her so successful. This chapter really made me step outside for a minute and look at leadership from a different perspective.
