Chapter 6 - Deploying Yourself: Strike Hard, Try Everything

The portion of this chapter that really resonated with me was the idea of reflection. Self reflection is very difficult and I have practiced self reflection a great deal, and I still don’t have it down yet. As you can see in the majority of my journal entries I have attempted to reflect back on my personal experiences and connect them to the topics in the reading.
I can remember back in school when we were required to complete reading reflections. We had to give our thoughts and feelings on topics. I had a lot of problems with this because I found myself writing what I thought the teacher wanted to hear instead of my thoughts. Then, I enrolled in a class called “Helper” and it was all about giving to others and building self-esteem in yourself by helping others. This class required us to keep a reflective journal and the teacher stated “There are no right or wrong answers in this journal. It is a growth journal”. It was then that I started to truly reflect on my thoughts, experiences, and feelings. Because of the process of reflection I have been able to use my mistakes as learning experiences. These mistakes have helped me to change things that needed to be changed. An example of this is in my first year of teaching. My first year went fairly well, but by reflecting at the end of the year I found multiple changes that needed to be making to be more successful the next year. I still find myself reflecting on the year and making a list of changes that I need to make over the summer to implement that following year. Reflecting has allowed me to keep moving and improving which is fundamental in education. Educator should never become stagnant and either should a successful leader!
